A MAN and a woman managed to get out safely after a fire ravaged the upstairs of a property.
Two fire engines from Havant and one from Cosham went to tackle the blaze at a terraced house in Middle Park Way, Leigh Park, at about 3am today.
Police were first on the scene and had led the man and woman to safety, although the woman was hurt.
Havant’s watch manager Lee Havey said: ‘When we turned up the occupiers had left the property with the assistance of a police officer.
‘The man and woman went to hospital.
‘The woman had broken bones. She was walking, but had broken at least one bone – maybe her arm or collarbone.’
It is thought the woman may have fallen down the stairs while trying to get out, but this has not been confirmed yet.
Firefighters used breathing equipment and hoses to put out the fire, which was contained in an upstairs bedroom.
The blaze was so fierce that the floor collapsed.
Mr Havey said: ‘It was very severe.
‘The upstairs bedroom was destroyed.
‘The upstairs was also completely smoke and heat damaged.’
No other properties were affected by the fire.
Firefighters were at the scene for around two hours and used fans to clear the smoke.
