TWO mothers have spoken of their pride at being nominated for prestigious awards for their charity work.

Clare Dimmer and Pam Marshall, both from Waterlooville, have worked tirelessly to make other people’s lives a little better despite their own struggles.

They were honoured at the Daily Mail Inspirational Women of the Year Awards, sponsored by Sanctuary Spa, at a glitzy ceremony where they rubbed shoulders with celebrities and had lunch at Downing Street.

Clare, a 57-year-old mum-of-two, has been battling cancer on and off for almost 20 years.

In that time she has endured gruelling treatment for breast cancer which led to secondary lung, bone and now intestinal cancer.

Despite this she founded the charity Breast Cancer UK which campaigns to have cancer causing chemicals removed from the environment. The EU recently passed a law banning the use of the harmful chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA) in babies’ bottles.

Clare, of Southwick Road, Denmead, said: ‘We met Samantha Cameron for lunch at 10 Downing Street and she was so lovely and really genuine.

‘She has a young child and said she noticed our Breast Cancer UK campaign about BPA in babies bottles and specifically went out and bought one free of it.

‘It was really exciting to hear.’

Pam, 43, was nominated for setting up Hannah’s Holiday Home Appeal in memory of her 10-year-old daughter Hannah who died of Hodgkins disease in 2004.

In the months before she died Hannah raised £10,000 for the Piam Brown ward at Southampton General Hospital where she was treated.

Pam then raised enough money to buy two luxury holiday homes for families in similar situations to take time out from gruelling hospital appointments.

She said: ‘I was overwhelmed to be nominated.

‘It’s just something you do every day and you don’t expect recognition.

‘It was lovely to meet all the other ladies and we made real connections with each other.’
