PART of a hospital was evacuated after a fire broke out in a laboratory.

The small blaze broke out in the pathology department at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, shortly before 2pm yesterday.

No-one was hurt in the incident, but the immediate surrounding area was evacuated as the laboratory contained chemicals.

Outpatient clinics were stopped early as the pathology department is nearby.

The emergency department stayed open but ambulances were temporarily diverted to Worthing and Portsmouth. The fire was out by 4.35pm.

Patients whose appointments were cancelled will be contacted to arrange a new time.

Clinics were set to run as normal today.
