D-DAY has arrived for Splash! contestant Penny Mordaunt.
Millions of viewers will tune in tonight to watch the Portsmouth North MP leap off a board on the ITV diving programme.
As previously reported, Penny will attempt a back dive straight, a daring leap that’s never been performed by a contestant on the programme before.
Talking about the level of support she’s received, Penny said: ‘I’m so grateful to Portsmouth for getting behind me.
‘It’s really wonderful.
‘Even if people are political, they have been able to rise above that and speak as a normal human being and just get behind the whole thing.’
Penny has been eating a healthy diet containing lots of leafy vegetables, lean protein and water in preparation.
Yesterday, she was still trying to heal up after trying a back dive for the first time off a 7.5m board in Southend-on-Sea on Wednesday.
She suffered bruising and the thumb on her left hand came out of its socket after landing awkwardly.
But she hopes to be fighting fit by the time she’s put in the spotlight tonight.
‘I’m trying to recover,’ Penny said. ‘My legs are still very, very painful.
‘The physiotherapists have given me some special cooling bags to reduce the swelling on my legs.
‘I’ve just been trying to look after myself and not worry about the show and calm my nerves.’
The show, held at an Olympic-sized pool at Inspire: Luton Sports Village, starts at 7pm.
Penny will be up against singer and musician Paul Young, model Danielle Lloyd, comedian Patrick Monahan and The Only Way Is Essex star Dan Osbourne.
Two of the five contestants will make it through to the semi-finals.
Talking about whether she fancies her chances, Penny said: ‘I don’t.
‘They are all good divers and they have got huge fan bases as well.’
