ENGLAND rugby sevens star Ollie Phillips visited the home of a round-the-world race in Gosport.

He had come to show his support for three people who will race in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 13-14, raising cash for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Crew members Simon Dixey, 52, Steve Mabey, 46, and Michelle Porter, 36 have each been affected by the degenerative disease.

Ollie works to promotes the society as his grandmother died after suffering from dementia.

He said: ‘It’s amazing what these guys are doing, you have to be pretty brave.

‘They’re taking a year out of their lives, it’s quite a lot of money to invest in something.

‘It’s a fabulous cause, Alzheimer’s is very close to my heart.

‘I wanted to get involved and help as much as I could.

‘And now I’ve ended up in Gosport on a boat.’

He added he hopes to complete a leg of the race.

The race will see experienced skippers lead amateur crews across the globe.
