CROWDS cheered and whistled as army veteran Bob Blackburn abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower this afternoon.

Mr Blackburn,85, who served in The Parachute Regiment between 1948 and 1956, made it look easy as he made the drop down the Portsmouth landmark with the flag of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity strapped to his back.

The pensioner  completed the challenge in a bid to raise money for the cause, which looks after serving and ex serving members of the army and their families.

Also taking part in the abseil for the charity was Same Difference star Sean Smith, 26.

Mr Blackburn said: ‘I really enjoyed it and I was right in my element. I wasn’t nervous at all. I just got on with it. My age doesn’t stop me from being active and I’m proud to be raising money for this charity. It’s close to my heart.’
