ROUND the world sailor Alex Thomson took a quick break in a race to wish his son happy birthday – on live TV.

The Gosport-based sailor is currently speeding along in the Vendée Globe, the gruelling solo race he started in November.

As previously reported in the The News, Alex has limited use of electricity aboard Hugo Boss, after it sustained damage to one of his hydrogenerators.

But the skipper was able to link up live on BBC Breakfast with his son Oscar and wife Kate to wish the youngster a happy second birthday ahead of the occasion on Monday.

Alex said: ‘I am so sad not to be there with him to celebrate and see him excited by his birthday,’

Alex had another reason to celebrate as he is fourth in the race and rounded Cape Horn for the first time as a solo skipper at 2.38am yesterday.
