AN ERUPTION of algae on a lake is the reason a dragon boat festival has been postponed.

The unusually warm April sparked a bloom of blue-green algae on the lake at Lakeside North Harbour, which was to be the venue for Portsmouth Annual Dragon Boat Festival this weekend.

Contact with the bacteria should be avoided and for this reason all activities on the lake have had to be rescheduled.

Carol Jenkinson, from Portsmouth and Southsea Rotary Club, said: ‘Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances at the venue we have had to take the difficult decision to postpone the dragon boat festival but have rescheduled it for later in the year.

‘The new date is to be October 3 and 4. We are very much hoping that all the teams will be able to join us again in October, enabling them to still raise thousands of pounds for various charities.’
