ANOTHER major sailing event will happen in Portsmouth on the same weekend the America’s Cup World Series takes place in the city next year.
The News can reveal thundercat catamarans will be raced around the seafront by ThunderCat Racing UK in an event being sponsored by veteran powerboat sailor Alan Priddy.
It comes after the announcement that the America’s Cup World Series will come to Portsmouth in 2015.
Mr Priddy said it will be exciting to see a range of maritime activity happening all in one place and visitors will really enjoy it.
Mr Priddy, from Portsmouth, said the catamaran competition will be comparable to short circuit formula one racing.
‘It’s going to be incredible,’ he said.
‘With the America’s Cup World Series as well there will be two days of incredible sailing on the seafront.
‘It’s an exciting time for Portsmouth.
‘I am born and bred in Portsmouth and I believe we are in the right place here again, what with things like Sir Ben Ainslie coming to promote us.
‘I have run a number of big events in Portsmouth and this just proves that Portsmouth is a maritime hub.
‘For a long time, Portsmouth was never promoted as a maritime hub.
‘We will do a big promotional push on it in March.’
The event has taken place in other parts of the UK before but never in Portsmouth.
It will include a funfair, live music and a craft fair on Castle Field, in Southsea.
