THE winners of the Hayling Island Scarecrow Festival will be announced on Sunday – and there is hot anticipation all round over who will claim the top prize.

There were almost 100 entries this year, which will be the last for some time.

Marie Telford, from Hayling Island Market Town Initiative which organises the event, said the calibre of Olympic-themed entries was very high.

For the past week hundreds of visitors have made their way around the island using trail sheets which are being sold for 25p at many shops in Hayling.

The winners will be announced at 3pm at Eastoke Plaza during the interval of a performance by Somerset band The Mangled Wurzels.

Marie said: ‘It’s going very well.

‘The Scarecrow Festival is a very popular with holiday makers and residents.

‘It’s a cheap day out for the family.

‘It can take several days to find them all so it’s a great chance to explore the place, nose in people’s front gardens and get some fresh air and exercise.’

For the first time ever there will be a cash prize for the winner – £100 – so there is a lot at stake.

Some of the spectacular displays include pole vaulters, rowing teams, synchronised swimmers and beach volleyball players.

The scarecrows will be on display until August 12.
