APPLICATIONS have been flooding in for The News monster £50,000 Comic Relief giveaway.

Dozens of good causes have applied for a slice of the cash which is going directly back into our community to help disadvantaged people.

Last year, Comic Relief – which celebrates 25 years this week – gave Wickham based Home Start Meon Valley £1,000.

It enabled the charity, based in Wickham, to train volunteers to help guide families with children under five through difficult times.

Homestart senior co-ordinator Claire Wilde said she would be applying soon for another grant and urged other community groups to do the same.

She said; ‘The money helped us so much and we are so grateful to Comic Relief – they have been amazing.

‘It makes a massive difference to families’ lives – but not just the families now.

‘The positive changes we make for one family will hopefully be passed down to their children and their children. The money from Comic Relief is creating a legacy.’

Grants are available to a wide range of community groups and organisations from between £500 and £1,000.

In the case of Homestart it has changed people’s lives.

Many of the families needing support in the Meon Valley area have had multiple births – twins and triplets – and can find it hard to get out and about using public transport.

The charity will give them support from six months to two years depending on their needs and will work alongside them for the long term until they feel able to cope.

Applications can be made from now until March 16 so start applying.
