SAVING the lives of two people in a daring rescue has earned two coastguard helicopter crewmen a bravery award.

Winchman Simon O’Mahony and winch operator Dave Peel will be presented with the Billy Deacon Search and Rescue Trophy at St James’s Palace tonight.

Their helicopter was scrambled from the search and rescue base in Lee-on-the-Solent in April last year after a 27ft yacht started sinking near the Isle of Wight.

Huge waves and strong winds left the four sailors on board clinging on for their lives. During the rescue attempt, Mr O’Mahony got caught in the sheets of the yacht and had to be freed by Mr Peel. The pair then rescued two sailors while lifeboat crews helped the others.
