THE leader of Fareham Borough Council has voiced concerns that the new Whiteley shopping centre will impact on smaller independent shops.

Councillor Sean Woodward said he is aware that the Whiteley Co-ownership trust is trying to convince big name retailers in Fareham to move into Whiteley.

Cllr Woodward said: ‘I believe that Fareham Borough Council has a duty to protect our villages and town centre shops. You only have to go to Portsmouth and see what Gunwharf Quays has done to the city centre. I don’t want it to happen to Fareham.’
