WORK has started to build almost 50 new homes next to an Emsworth park.

Banner Homes Southern Ltd has been granted permission to build 48 homes, apartments and chalets in Oak Tree Drive.

The site is surrounded by Southleigh Park to the north and west.

It will include two, three and four-bedroom homes, set around a central green, including a toddler play area.

Developers said it would also include an ‘extensive wildlife buffer zone’ around the edge of the site, incorporating existing trees, new trees and hedgerows.

A previous application by George Wimpey Southern Counties Ltd to build 68 homes on the land was refused by Havant Borough Council because it would be too cramped.

John Kennedy, group land director for Banner Homes, said: ‘This latest planning permission signals Banner Homes continuing investment in new opportunities.’

Work has just started and a show home is expected to open in early 2014.
