A MARINE charity is continuing its call for the banning of Chinese lanterns.

Spain is the latest country to ban the sale and use of lanterns which can cause harm to marine and wildlife.

There are bans or restrictions in Germany, Austria, Australia and Malta and Vietnam, where they have been blamed for serious forest fires.

The Marine Conservation Society is calling for action in the UK and is supported by the RNLI.

Emma Snowden, from MCS, said: ‘These mobile fireballs have to come down somewhere, and it’s often on farmland or out at sea.

‘We have received reports of numerous false alarms for the Coastguard and RNLI after people have mistaken them for flares.’
