CHILDREN are being encouraged to pick up a book and take part in a new reading challenge during the Christmas holidays.

Portsmouth City Council’s library service is supporting the Reading Agency’s Christmas mini-reading challenge from this Friday until Tuesday, January 6.

Children keep a record of their progress online and reading three books will earn them a virtual badge and a secret video award.

And Beddow Library, Milton Road, will also present a certificate to any children visiting who have completed the challenge.

The scheme is an extension of the national summer reading challenge.

Children should visit summerreadingchallenge.org.uk to register or update their profile.
