ROCKIN’ Rita Hay was an avid music fan and stage performer.

Now she has been immortalised in a charity single released in aid of Radio Haslar by her DJ son Andrew.

He asked songwriter Steve Skully to write and record the song, called Rockin’ Rita, to help raise funds for the station.

Rita, pictured below, died in 1984 at the age of 52 after a battle with Addison’s disease.

Andrew hopes the release of the single next week will help with the Gosport station’s running costs.

The 45-year-old said: ‘She loved rock and roll music and she absolutely loved to sing.

‘She would always sing around the house and just about anywhere.

‘The song really does sound great and people seem to really like it.

‘It certainly does her justice. It’s something she would have been very proud of.

‘I do the rock and roll show on Radio Haslar and I wanted to do something on what would have been her 80th birthday.

‘I met Steve Skully when we were both acting in a TV series earlier this year and he agreed to do it.’

Radio Haslar needs around £8,500 this year to keep running.

Last year it only needed £5,500.

The station’s presenters broadcast to patients of Gosport’s War Memorial Hospital and on the internet throughout the day.

In a separate attempt at raising cash, Andrew has raised around £200 by holding a sponsored slim.

The DJ, who presents Radio Haslar’s Newsweek show, has lost two stone since taking up the challenge in July.

Through a new diet and weekly sessions at Gosport’s Slimming World group, Andrew now weighs 15 stone.

He added: ‘It has been going well.

‘I can’t believe I have managed to lose two stone already.

‘I’m pleased with how it’s been going.

‘I’m going to try and carry on even when the sponsored part of it is over. If anything it has taught me a little bit more about healthy living.

‘The goal is to lose two stone by the time the challenge ends in October so to have already achieved that feels amazing.’

If anyone would like to donate to Andrew’s slimming challenge, cheques can be made payable to Radio Haslar, The Studio Centre, Thorngate Halls, Bury Road, Gosport.

Rockin’ Rita will be on sale at Reflex Records in Gosport’s High Street from Monday.
