A GROUP of ladies donning red hats and purple clothes recently brought a splash of colour to The News’ headquarters in Hilsea.

Members of The Red Hat Society were given a tour of the printing room and staff gave the group an insight into the history of the newspaper.

Afterwards the society, which meets every month, had lunch at The Coach and Horses, in Hilsea.

The society was founded in America 14 years ago when artist Sue Ellen Cooper gave a friend a red bowler hat and a poem by Jenny Joseph called ‘Warning – When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple’ about someone who wanted to wear a red hat and purple clothes when she was older.

Since then women across the globe have become part of the society. Member Jean Strangeway said: ‘We had a fantastic time at The News. It made for a great day out.’
