GRANDMOTHER Beryl Scott has picked up her MBE from Buckingham Palace.

The 70-year-old from was recognised for her 31 years as a dinner lady at Padnell Infants School, in Cowplain, and almost 40 years with Waterlooville Scouting movement.

Beryl and husband Chris, 71, went to the Palace on Tuesday to pick up the MBE which was presented to her by Princess Anne.

Beryl said: ‘The MBE came out of the blue at the end of May, my husband knew about it but I didn’t. To be quite truthful with you I thought it was a joke.

‘It came in a very formal letter and I had to keep it secret until it came out formally in June.’

Beryl said her day out at the Palace ranked as one of the most exciting days of her life. She said: ‘It was very good. I was very nervous but very pleased with how it went.

‘It’s not often you go to the Palace.

‘Princess Anne was very nice, I felt very comfortable with her. She chatted and I said something that made her laugh but don’t ask me what it was because I can’t remember - it’s all a bit of a blur.’
