A CYCLING duo have set off on a 1,500-mile cycle ride through Europe in aid of the charity Help for Heroes.

Dave Chivers, 18, and Ben Smith, 19, of Godwin Close Havant, started their journey from the French ferry port of Caen last week, and hope to finish their trek to Valencia in March.

The pair, who met at Havant College, hope to raise hundreds of pounds for the charity which supports wounded servicemen, and have left behind family, friends and their jobs to complete the mission.

Dave, of Blackbrook House Drive, Fareham, said of the trip: ‘While my partner Emily was living in Spain I thought it would be cool to go out and stay with her, and I love cycling so thought I’d ride there.

‘I wanted someone to do it with and luckily Ben was game so one night, after a few drinks, we decided to do it!’

The teenagers have chosen a coastal route of almost 1,500 miles, which will see them pass through Nantes and Bordeaux, before following the border to their finishing point in Valencia via Barcelona.

And their quest has not been helped with the icy conditions being experienced across the continent.
