THREE-times record breaking sailor Dee Caffari has been appointed as an honorary commander by the Royal Navy.

The round-the-world yachtswoman from Titchfield was given the honour in recognition of her service to the sea and Britain’s maritime heritage.

Dee said: ‘It is an honour to be recognised for my achievements and support of the armed forces. I have enjoyed the links I have established and maintained with the Royal Navy and look forward to being presented with my uniform.’

One of her links with the navy is through her close work with Toe In The Water, the armed forces charity that uses sailing as part of the rehabilitation process after injury.

Director general of army medicine and the charity’s chairman Major General M von Bertele added: ‘Dee has been a great inspiration. It’s great to see her dedication and passion recognised in this way.’
