A VILLAGE is set to get its first shop following the demolition of an old petrol station.

The former Chidham garage and service station, off Main Road, near Emsworth, will be knocked down and replaced with five three-bedroom houses, one four-bedroom house, and a retail unit for a shop with three two-bedroom flats above it.

A planning application for the work was approved by the planning committee of Chichester District Council.

Funtington councillor Julie Tassell: ‘I’m delighted to know there’s going to be a store there because I think it will be much needed.’

She said it was a garage she used to use and had been run by a ‘lovely bunch of guys much missed’.

Southbourne Cllr Bob Hayes added: ‘Chidham has needed a community store for quite some time. This seems to be a well-though-out scheme getting the most out of the site.’

Chidham and Hambrook Parish Council initially objected to the proposal, but withdrew it after plans were amended.
