THE date for the funeral of a former councillor and campaigner has now been confirmed.
Friends and family will gather to remember John Thompson at Portsmouth’s Kingston Cemetery Chapel on Thursday, January 29.
The service will start at 2pm.
As previously reported in The News, the 64-year-old died on Boxing Day following a brief illness.
Mr Thompson served as a councillor on Hampshire county and Fareham borough councils during the 1990s, and more recently led a a campaign against Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock.
Mr Thompson fought on behalf of the vulnerable woman Mr Hancock was accused of acting inappropriately towards during his time as a councillor on Portsmouth City Council.
Mr Hancock apologised for his actions last summer in a statement authorised by the High Court in London.
The woman subjected to Mr Hancock’s advances, who cannot be named for legal reasons, led tributes to Mr Thompson and described him as ‘a father to me and my son.’
Mr Thompson, who lived in Park Gate, near Fareham, had also called for a fresh police investigation to be launched into Mr Hancock’s conduct after the MP apologised for his actions.
The campaigner also joined Ukip in November and had hopes of becoming the party’s parliamentary candidate for Portsmouth South in the future.
