THE tragedies suffered by working people were remembered at a poignant ceremony.

Dozens of people gathered in Victoria Park, Portsmouth, for International Workers’ Memorial Day.

Sean Hoyle, from the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition, said: ‘Today we remember the tragedies suffered by working people and resolve that by organising strong workplaces they are never repeated. Strong trade unions save lives.

‘Through TUSC, working people now have a political voice prepared to stand up and extend our rights at work, included defending vital health and safety legislation.’

Every year on April 28, trade unions and health and safety campaigners all over the world remember those who have tragically lost their lives because of work. The slogan for the day is ‘remember the dead – fight for the living’.
