THE Emsworth Concert Band will welcome in Christmas when a town’s festive lights are switched on.

A market, grotto, carol singing and fire engines will be part of the celebrations on Friday when the lights are switched on in St Peter’s Square.

The fun begins at 5.15pm with carol singing and music, which is led by Canon Simon Sayers.

Children from Emsworth primary schools will take part and the town’s youngest school-age resident, Esme Howard, four, will switch on the lights with the mayor of Havant Marjorie Smallcorn, before the arrival of Father Christmas as he travels on to his grotto in The Hewitt Centre in South Street.

The grotto will be open from 6pm to all children. There will be a festive market in South Street car park from 4pm.

Emsworth fire brigade will welcome children to the station in North Street so they can climb on to the fire engine.

The Emsworth Business Association has organised the event. It will be followed on December 13 with a Christmas market and on December 20 with the Hampshire Farmer’s Market.
