A FAREHAM girl who turned her life around with help from youth charity The Prince’s Trust was recognised with a prestigious royal award.
Georgia Downer, 20, was shortlisted for the American Express Breakthrough Award at The Prince’s Trust and Samsung Celebrate Success Awards in London.
During her teenage years Georgia had trouble at school, was estranged from her family and suffered a serious accident.
Georgia said: ‘I lacked direction and struggled with low self-esteem which on reflection I feel led me to not taking my education seriously.’
Georgia sought help from The Prince’s Trust, which helped her to enrol on to the ‘Get into Maritime’ scheme run with the UK Sailing Academy (UKSA) and The Trust. She secured a place on the UKSA Go Beyond course. Six weeks of training on the Isle of Wight rewarded her with level two and three qualifications in sailing and being an assistant dinghy instructor.
Georgia is now a full-time employee of UKSA and she hopes to gain full instructor status in sailing and water-based disciplines.
