NEW research has discovered the most popular names for children in Portsmouth.

Character Cottages found that the top boy’s name was George and the favourite girl’s name was Amelia.

George comes in eighth nationally and Amelia fifth.

In Chichester, the results are Oliver and Mia, in Brighton, Oscar and Evie and in Southampton, Harry and Amelia.

Director of Character Cottages Andrew Soy said: ‘As experts in family holidays it was really interesting to see how name trends varied through different cities and regions.

‘Some of the most popular names appealed across the entire country while we also saw some names which were more localised to specific regions – often names that were traditional Gaelic or Welsh.’
