A FORMER boxer is looking forward to seeing ‘the closest he’s ever come to death’ when he appears on national television.

Andy Gatenby, from Fratton, will be introduced on the BBC Two’s Ultimate Hell Week challenge on Sunday at 9pm.

Andy, 28, said he faced a particularly difficult challenge in this weekend’s show.

He said: ‘It was an experience of a lifetime, the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.

‘The challenge on this Sunday’s show is, hand on my heart, the closest I’ve ever come to death.

‘I nearly drowned on there.’

The broadcast follows Andy’s appearance last night on The One Show, in which he took on members of the audience in a challenge inspired by Ultimate Hell Week.

Andy said the show is all about 29 of the UK’s fittest men and women being pushed beyond their mental and physical limits by battle-hardened veterans from the world’s toughest special forces.

Andy said he had reverted to a diet of ‘beer and crisps’ since filming finished filming and had only recently got back into a more healthy lifestyle.

He said he had never faced anything more difficult than taking part in the challenge.

‘It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done,’ he said.

‘I’ve run 250 miles in a week before and I’ve had professional boxing fights.

‘But this was the hardest thing I’ve ever come up against.’
