RON Mitchell’s sunflower started life in a humble coffee cup – but it now towers over 10ft tall.

After watching the plant grow and grow, the 67-year-old had to move his sunflower into his garden in Twyford Avenue.

But Ron, from Stamshaw, can enjoy his coffee this morning in the knowledge that his whopping sunflower leads our challenge to find the tallest in the area.

The sun-loving plant has proved a hit with Ron’s grandson Lenny Mitchell, aged three.

The pair water the sunflower together three times a week and enjoy watching it grow.

Their efforts have seen the sunflower bloom to a height of 10ft 11in.

Ron, a retired taxi driver, said: ‘I don’t do much in the garden but it gives me something to do.

‘My grandson comes by and we help the sunflower grow. He loves to look after it. I find it difficult to get about but it gives me pleasure to sit in the garden and watch the sunflower.

‘Everyone is commenting on how big it is. It’s as high as the extension next door and it looks like a small tree. The stems on it are so thick.’

There is still plenty of time to take part. If you think your sunflower can top Ron and Lenny’s we will come out and measure it. Closing date for entry is Friday, September 2.
