GOLFERS will gather for a day of sporting fun to pay tribute to a well-liked player.

A memorial day has been organised at Fleetlands Golf Club in Gosport in memory of Mat Evans.

As reported previously, the 41-year-old died on Boxing Day in his sleep. He is believed to have died from sudden adult death syndrome.

Mat, who lived in Gosport, had worked at Ian’s Barber’s Shop in Havant for the past two decades and customers raised more than £1,700 in his memory.

Mat’s Golf Day takes place on Saturday, July 12, starting with a barbecue at midday, followed by the tournament and then a curry and band in the evening.

Friend Ian Russell said: ‘Myself and Mat’s family have been planning a day so all of his friends and customers and work colleagues could spend some time enjoying Mat’s favourite place to play golf, Fleetlands.’

A memorial bench has been placed at the fifth tee. To get involved pop into the shop or email ian.russell62@yahoo.co.uk.
