THE Christmas season will officially start in Gosport tomorrow, with the switching on of the town’s lights and a fireworks display.

The Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Richard Dickson, will be escorted by two stars of the Cinderella pantomime being held in Ferneham Hall, Fareham, to turn on the lights in Gosport High Street at 5pm.

The seasonal cheer, boosted with music from Express FM in Lawrence Square, will be spread over the day, with a craft and gifts market setting the mood from 9am before the switch-on of the lights at 5pm.

The full day of activities will also see the performance of Aladdin, a mini panto by Thorngate Panto and Variety company, along with seasonal music and dance.

Pupils from St John’s Primary School will sing carols at the Christmas tree.

Children aged under 10 years old will get the chance to make lanterns for free at Gosport Discovery Centre between 11am and midday, if they are accompanied by an adult.

And the St Vincent Singers will be performing Gosport Discovery Centre’s café from 11am until midday and kids can visit Father Christmas in his Grotto to get a gift.

Cllr Dickson said: ‘This event is enjoyed by everyone, but especially the youngsters who love the lights, the snow, Father Christmas and the fireworks.

‘The atmosphere is just wonderful and a great way to get your Christmas off to a flying start.’
