DRIVERS are being warned the Hindhead tunnel will be closed in both directions next week for a training exercise.

Highways England said both sides will be closed on Thursday, October 29, so the emergency services can carry out an exercise to see if they can deal with an accident or fire in the tunnel on the A3.

The agency said it is a legal requirement and the full-scale drill is carried out every four years.

Ollie Brown, from the Highways England emergency planning team, said: ‘Thankfully major incidents inside a tunnel are a rare occurrence; however it’s vital both our teams and the emergency services are fully prepared.

‘We have carefully planned this closure to take place overnight, when traffic flows are at their lowest.’

The tunnel will be closed in both directions overnight, between 9pm and 5am. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A31 and A325.
