AN HISTORIC 18th-century gun was removed from Spitbank Fort yesterday.

The fort in the middle of Portsmouth Harbour is under new owners Amazing Retreats, which removed the famous replica gun as part of its plans to transform the fort in to an exclusive hotel.

In a painstaking two-hour operation, the gun was removed and taken by boat to Camber Dock in Old Portsmouth.

The gun will be placed on permanent display at Fort Brockhurst in Gosport.

Amazing Retreats plans to open Spitbank Fort in 2011.
