Youngsters at a Portsmouth school captured the spirit of Blue Day today as thousands took part in our annual fundraiser.

Children at Wimborne Junior School jumped for joy as they posed for a picture.

They were among children at schools throughout the area who dressed in blue to help us raise money for the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.

And at shops and firms staff also pushed the boat out to support the cause.

The charity was set up by Tom Prince’s family after the teenager lost his battle with osteosarcoma – a rare form of bone cancer – in 2004, just a day before his 16th birthday.

Clinton Prince, Tom’s dad, said he was looking forward to another successful day of fundraising for the charity. The take-up across the community again is fantastic.

‘From a personal point of view, I’m so pleased that people are doing it.

‘I’d like to thank everybody in Portsmouth who has taken part and people that haven’t taken part that have wished us well.

‘Thanks for staying with us for so long.

‘People can’t wait to do it. They look forward to it. It’s a fantastic feeling.

‘At the end of the day it was our decision to do it and I’m so pleased with the way the people of Portsmouth responded.’

It comes as Tom’s parents recently visited Downing Street and met David Cameron.

It was part of an event where the Prime Minister met representatives from local charities.

Clinton said: ‘It was surreal.

‘He was speaking from experience as he has lost a child.

‘He knows the heartache and pain.

‘So he started talking to us like a parent. He was very polite.

‘It wasn’t until afterwards that I realised what an honour it was to be there.’

Blue Day was first held in 2008 when Pompey reached the semi-finals and then the final of the FA Cup.

So far, around £857,000 has been raised for the charity – and £213,000 has been raised by the seven Blue Days.
