A RELAY swim around the Isle of Wight by a group of women raised money for the county’s air ambulance.

The Ladies Wot Swim undertook the challenge of swimming around the coast of the island in August.

And they recently visited the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance base to see how the £4,000 they raised is being spent.

Heather Lunt, 34, of Lee-on-the-Solent, Kate Steels-Fryatt, 44, from Bishop’s Waltham, Pauline McCracken, 40, from Winchester and Ann Brimelow, 67, from London were the swimmers.

They were helped by Chris Pitman, who had hoped to do the relay but had to have a pacemaker fitted while she was training hard for the event.

Chris, a swimming instructor, from Havant, said: ‘We were invited by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance to attend their family day at Sandown Airport. It was an opportunity to meet and have a chat with the crew.

‘On the fundraising front, we have raised more than £4,000. You could say donations are flying in.

‘The Ladies Wot Swim have raised enough to keep the air ambulance operational for a day. Possibly for 24 hours seven minutes and 24 seconds, exactly the time it took to swim around the island.’
