Have your say

I’d like to make a plea on behalf of our poor hard-done-by Portsmouth telephone number.

It’s shown in so many different configurations – often on the sides of commercial vehicles of businesses that should know better – that it’s no wonder any newcomers are completely baffled.

Many large, long-established companies are guilty of getting it wrong on their paperwork.

The code for Portsmouth is just the first three digits - 023 - just as London’s is 020.

We share our code with Southampton so the 023 can be dropped when phoning a Southampton number.

Our telephone numbers consist of the following eight digits split into two groups of four.

Take a look in the local telephone directory to check it out or the front of this newspaper, although the brackets aren’t strictly necessary.

I’d like to put the record straight in the small hope that this letter will be read and acted upon so that those of us who find the whole thing very irritating (I know that I’m not alone in this) can be spared at least some of the time.
