COURAGEOUS Lucie Goodman is all smiles after being recognised for her determination in learning to swim.

The 11-year-old, who is blind, has proven to be an inspiration to all at Westgate Leisure Centre in Chichester.

Over the past year she has attended weekly swimming lessons at the centre and battled the odds to become a confident swimmer.

Lucie was named Achiever of the Year at this year’s Southern Water Learn to Swim awards.

She was nominated by the Westgate staff and was presented with the award by former Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew MBE.

Lucie, who lives in North Mundham, near Chichester, said: ‘Sometimes I find swimming hard, but I like using the floats and diving in. My favourite stroke is the backstroke.

‘I really like coming to Westgate and the teachers are nice.’

Lucie’s mum Lisa said: ‘Swimming is an essential life skill as well as being good exercise. It has given Lucie independence and it means she can now come here swimming with her friends.’

The disabled changing facilities at the council-run centre have recently been extended.
