A £2 coin commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Mary Rose is set to go into circulation.
As reported in The News last year, The Royal Mint has produced a 22-carat gold coin depicting the famous English warship, which was part of King Henry VIII’s Tudor battle fleet.
But now a base metal version of this limited-edition coin will also enter circulation, finding its way into the nation’s change up and down the country.
The Mary Rose, at The Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth, was chosen for the coin to mark the 500th anniversary of the great ship’s maiden voyage.
The coin was created by designer John Bergdahl. Around the edge of the coin there is a Latin inscription which reads ‘Your noblest ship 1511’.
It is available to buy now from the Royal Mint. To find out more visit royalmint.com/store/BritishBase
