A MAN wearing a clown mask and a suit has been scaring people across Portsmouth.

Several people have posted pictures and comments about the man online, as he was spotted near the Guildhall on Thursday and in Southsea on Friday.

Student Lily Scanlan, 19, said he frightened her when he rode past her on a bike in Elm Grove, Southsea.

She said: ‘It was really weird.

‘He said something to me, like he was putting on a voice. It was really creepy.’

The man went into dance clothing store Stage Door, in Elm Grove, on Friday afternoon and scared the shop assistants.

Karen Wilcock, who works at the shop, said: ‘He will not be welcome if he comes back again.

‘Whatever was he thinking? Coming into a shop that sells tutus for two-year-olds and standing there not saying a word.

‘It could be a publicity stunt. Whatever it was, it was very strange.’

The clown, who was wearing a scary clown mask and a suit, has also been seen in Osborne Road, Southsea.

Andre Guedeney, 34, manager of La Croissanterie, said the clown cycled up to him and asked him for a cigarette in a strange voice.

Mr Guedeney said: ‘It was very odd.’

Dozens of people took to Facebook over the weekend to report their sightings of the character.

One person wrote: ‘He was down [the] Guildhall yesterday just standing there holding a balloon.

‘Very scary if you don’t like clowns.’

Other people reported seeing the clown in various places throughout the city over the past few
days.
