PROSPECTIVE parents got the chance to look around a new school for Portsmouth’s Muslim community.

The open day was held at the Madani Academy in Lake Road, Buckland.

The school is set to open in September.

Luthufur Rahman, who will be in charge of the school, said the open day was a good opportunity for families to have a look at the new facilities. Local police officers set up a stall to hand out information and give reassurances over safety.

The Madani Academy is taking over the former council-owned Merefield House in Buckland. The people behind the academy bought Merefield House from the council for £750,000 and the community has rallied round to have enough funds to set up the school.

Mr Rahman said it was ‘a real community project’.
