YOUNG equestrians got their first taste of competition at a horse show.

The Denmead Express Event and Fun Show also saw those who took part in the Olympic Summer of Sport event get their medals _ albeit two weeks later than expected.

Organiser Felicity Hull said: ‘This is a fun event for the grass roots people to come out and enjoy themselves.

‘They don’t get penalised for doing something wrong, they get points for doing something right, so hopefully it will encourage them to keep trying.

‘And we also work with Denmead Parish Council, which has been taking part in Winchester City Council’s Olympic Summer of Sport, so we had the eventing part of that and each section got given their medals.’

Co-organiser David Smith said: ‘The main field we would have used is still waterlogged, so we had to defer for two weeks from September 2, and we did lose a few people as a result, but we still had about 100 competitors.’

Profits from the main show in June and this event go towards new play equipment and youth projects for Denmead.
