OVER-50s who love a kickabout are being encouraged to take part in a new scheme – walking football.

Havant Borough Council is backing the sport to get people fitter and healthier.

It is designed for men aged 50-plus and the sessions are open to anyone who is no longer able to keep up with the pace of traditional 11 or five-a-side games. All the rules are the same except for one difference – no running.

Councillor Yvonne Weeks, in charge of communities, said: ‘The aim of walking football is to help people to continue living an active lifestyle, especially those who may have suffered injuries to continue playing the game.

‘The sessions are intended to help players with their balance and co-ordination. There is no need to pre-book, simply just bring yourself, a drink and a pair of trainers.’

The first session is tomorrow at Emsworth Recreation Ground, in Horndean Road, from 5pm to 6pm. The first session is free and £3 per week thereafter.
