A NEW programme has been started at a college to help young people who are thinking about becoming a teacher.

Havant Sixth Form College has launched the scheme to give students detailed information about teaching in primary, secondary or special schools.

The programme has built up strong links with the University of Chichester and local schools.

It includes talks from current university students studying teaching degrees about what it is really like in the classroom and what is expected when studying on teaching courses.

Students on the programme are given chances to observe lessons informally.

Dan Roberts, a PE teacher, who launched the programme, said: ‘There should be some additional support and training for those students interested in going into the highly competitive teaching profession. Through accessing the specialist activities and developing their skills and knowledge within the programme, students will stand out during their university interview.’
