DISABLED Paul Smith was backed by Cosham police on his epic 200-mile wheelchair challenge.

The 54-year-old, pictured here with officers in a photograph posted on Twitter, left Fratton Park yesterday to continue his gruelling journey.

Mr Smith, a former leading seaman specialist in the Royal Navy, is self-propelling his wheelchair from Portland in Dorset to the Emirates Stadium in London in his bid to raise £50,000 for Save The Children this year.

Despite being left severely disabled in a road accident in 1991, Mr Smith, from Magdala Road, Cosham, has since raised more than £1.5m for charity.

He chose to leave from Portland as it is where he was based in the navy.
