IT’S not just humans looking to lose a few pounds this Easter – this dog has shed more than 6lbs in three months.

Round hound Max was an astonishing 44lbs in December, and was set a target of just 20lbs.

He is one of 11 pets taking part in the PDSA’s Pet Fit Club, a six-month diet and fitness challenge for animals.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will face the scales for the final time in June, with the winning owner claiming a pet-friendly holiday worth £300.

Owner Michael Stapleton of North End, Portsmouth, said: ‘I am so pleased at the changes in Max. He’s taken to the programme really well – apart from the occasional begging he’s been very good and is so much more active now he’s started losing weight.

‘I’ve stuck to the diet completely and we’re making sure he’s getting plenty of exercise. I really hope that with PDSA’s help he can hit his target weight by the end of 2011.’

A PDSA report showed nearly a third of all dogs in the region are overweight.
