A PROJECT to collect 1,000 knitted poppies is well under way at the Royal Navy Museum.

To mark the 100th year since the start of the First World War, the museum, along with HMS Alliance, is collecting the poppies.

Barbara Mason, who is a former member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, has been one of the ladies taking part in the knitting.

She and a friend have attended sessions to help make some of the 1,000 items the museum is looking to collect.

She said: ‘There have been several sessions of ladies getting together to help mark the start of the war.

‘The aim is to get about 1,000 poppies knitted. I think there are already nearly 700 of them finished.’
