TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular member of the community who has died at the age of 106.

Doris Hern lived at Thalassa Nursing Home, in Western Way, Gosport, where she had lived for the last six years.

She died at the home last Friday. She wasn’t suffering from an illness.

Close friend Trish Kelly, of Tebourba Drive, Alverstoke, had known her for about 45 years.

She said: ‘She was just a remarkable lady. ‘Everybody who met her remembered her.

‘She was very much an outdoor girl.

‘She had a very good, healthy upbringing. She just loved life.

‘She was always so pleased to see you. Her manners were always impeccable. It’s very difficult to sum her up.’

Doris was born in Stamshaw, Portsmouth, in 1908, before she and her family moved to Waterlooville.

She started a nursing career in Hayling Island after training in Padstow, Cornwall, and was later a district nurse.

She was married to Gosport Councillor John Hern for 51 years before his death in 1988.

Mrs Kelly added: ‘Her whole life, her and her husband they just gave all their lives to so many different charities. It’s just beyond belief.

‘She always had a sense of humour.

‘I once asked her how she dealt with all the fuss in her life and she said ‘I have always been able to adapt’. That’s what got her through.’

Until recently, Doris was active in the League of Friends for Gosport War Memorial Hospital.

Last year, Doris planted a cherry tree on her birthday at the home.

Mrs Kelly added: ‘It’s been a privilege knowing her and looking after her.

‘I am very proud that I was in that position to be able to help her.

‘She was well known in Gosport through one way or another.

‘It’s absolutely incredible. She belonged to so many things and helped so many people.

‘I don’t think I am ever going to meet anybody like that again in my life.

‘She will always be remembered and loved by so many people.’

A thanksgiving service will take place at 2pm on Thursday, November 20 at the United Reformed Church in Stoke Road, Gosport. Anybody is welcome to attend.
