AN ARMY cadet has set a new national athletics record.

Corporal Gemma Donovan, from Hilsea, set a new national cadet record for the 400m, helping the south east region to win the National Champions Cup.

The 16-year-old, from 2 Platoon, B Company, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force, was taking part in the annual national championships held in Nottingham.

As a member of the South East Region Athletics team she received a 400m gold medal and a national champion badge for 2011. Gemma also went on to win another gold medal in the high jump and two bronze medals in the 100m and the team relay.
