He’s otherwise engaged of course, but spaceman Tim Peake is a top choice as the perfect guest for Christmas dinner.

The astronaut from Westbourne near Emsworth is second only to TV duo Ant and Dec in a fun poll conducted by hotel chain Travelodge.

The company, which has 506 hotels across the UK and is a provider of a ‘spare room’ for Britons who have visiting family and friends, surveyed 2,500 adults to identify the nation’s ideal Christmas guest and to find out about their hosting plans.

The research found that 52 per cent of households in Portsmouth will have family and friends staying over the festive holidays. On average it will be three guests who will stay for three days.

The top three qualities local people look for in guests staying over Christmas are ‘funny’, ‘good conversation’ and ‘entertaining. The least popular traits are ‘overbearing’, ‘bossy’ and ‘grumpy’.

Here are the top 10 ideal Christmas guests for people in Portsmouth:

1. Ant & Dec

2. Major Tim Peake

3. Holly Willoughby

4. Mary Berry

5. Sir David Attenborough

6. Prince Harry

7. Kate Middleton

8. Steph & Dom from Gogglebox

9. Alan Carr

10. Philip Schofield

Interestingly locals voted US President, Barack Obama, in 14th place in the poll. This is well ahead of Jeremy Corbyn in 28th place and David Cameron in 30th position.

Findings also revealed that 35 per cent of locals reported that Christmas guests arrive too early and 53 per cent believe they just get in the way.

The mother in law is the most dreaded Christmas guest, followed by mum as both women know best and will interfere with the day’s planned proceedings.
