HRH the Prince of Wales has visited Fareham today to officially open the National Operations Centre.

The centre coordinates coastguard rescues around the whole UK and become operational last September.

Today Prince Charles, who has been Honorary Commodore of Her Majesty’s Coastguard since 1980, will mark its officially opening by unveiling a plaque and meeting staff.

Richard Parkes, director of maritime operations at MCA, said: ‘the official opening of the National Maritime Centre marks another important milestone in the history of Her Majesty’s Coastguard.’

Sir Alan Massey, chief executive of the MCA, said: ‘This is a wonderful day for Her Majesty’s Coastguard. We are greatly honoured.’
